Areas We Service Across Wollongong & the Illawarra

We provide solar battery installation Wollongong homeowners can rely on across eligible parts of the Illawarra, from the northern villages and escarpment suburbs through Wollongong, Dapto, Shellharbour and Kiama.

Wollongong City & Northern Suburbs

Established homes across Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, Corrimal and Woonona range from older brick homes to renovated properties with existing solar. Available wall space, access and the condition of the existing electrical system can all affect installation.

Suburbs: Wollongong, North Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, Towradgi, Corrimal, Bellambi, Woonona, Bulli

Northern Villages & Helensburgh

Homes from Thirroul through to Helensburgh can sit on tighter blocks, steep sites or properties with restricted side access. We assess how equipment can be positioned, accessed and serviced before confirming what's possible.

Suburbs: Thirroul, Austinmer, Coledale, Wombarra, Scarborough, Stanwell Park, Otford, Helensburgh

Escarpment & Western Suburbs

Properties around Figtree, Keiraville, Mount Keira and Unanderra can have split levels, sloping blocks and less straightforward access. Existing solar generation can also vary depending on roof orientation and afternoon shading.

Suburbs: Figtree, Keiraville, Gwynneville, Mount Keira, Mount Pleasant, Balgownie, Mount Ousley, Unanderra

Southern Wollongong

Homes around Warrawong, Port Kembla, Berkeley and Windang include a mix of established properties and newer renovations. We look at existing solar, switchboard capacity and available installation space before sizing the system.

Suburbs: Warrawong, Port Kembla, Cringila, Berkeley, Lake Heights, Windang, Primbee

Dapto & the West Dapto Corridor

Dapto and surrounding areas include established homes alongside newer developments. Newer properties may already have electrical infrastructure suited to battery storage, while existing solar systems need to be checked for inverter compatibility.

Suburbs: Dapto, Horsley, Koonawarra, Brownsville, Kembla Grange, Yallah

Shellharbour, Albion Park & Shell Cove

The southern Illawarra has a mix of established brick homes and newer builds around Shell Cove, Flinders, Calderwood and Albion Park. Site access, available wall space and existing solar equipment can vary considerably.

Suburbs: Shellharbour, Shell Cove, Flinders, Blackbutt, Oak Flats, Barrack Heights, Warilla, Albion Park, Albion Park Rail, Calderwood

Kiama & the Coastal Villages

Homes around Kiama, Minnamurra, Gerringong and Gerroa can have coastal exposure and, in some locations, tighter blocks or restricted access. We consider those conditions alongside your existing solar and electrical setup.

Suburbs: Kiama, Kiama Downs, Minnamurra, Jamberoo, Gerringong, Gerroa

Solar Battery Costs in Wollongong

What moves the solar battery price in Wollongong isn't a single number, it's a handful of factors:

Usable capacity you need

Single-phase vs three-phase power

Whether a new inverter is required

Retrofit onto existing solar vs a new system

Rebates and current promotions applied

Switchboard work, cable runs, available installation space, and site access can also affect the final cost. For solar battery installation in Illawarra's tighter or sloping blocks, getting equipment into position can be a more significant consideration than it would be on a straightforward site.

Where a Battery Can Go in an Illawarra Home

Not every home is a straightforward fit, and we'd rather tell you that upfront than after a quote.

What a site assessment checks:

  • Clearances from doors and windows
  • Ventilation
  • Proximity to fuel sources
  • Access for servicing
  • Existing solar and inverter setup
  • Switchboard capacity and available installation space

Adding a Battery to Existing Solar

If you're adding Illawarra or Wollongong home solar batteries to an existing system, we'll check the inverter's age and type, your solar array size, switchboard capacity, and whether the system can support a battery.

If the existing inverter isn't suitable, AC coupling may allow the new battery to operate alongside it rather than replacing the whole solar system.

Newer homes can be different. Some properties in newer estates may already have a battery-ready hybrid inverter installed, which can change both the installation process and the equipment required.

Backup During Outages

A battery can keep selected essential circuits running during an outage, but it won't necessarily power the whole house.

Depending on how the system is configured, backup may cover essentials such as refrigeration, lighting, internet, and selected power points. Your proposed backup setup will be explained before installation, so you know exactly what will and won't stay powered.

Local Considerations

Escarpment and northern village homes can have steep or split-level blocks, particularly through the western suburbs and from Thirroul towards Stanwell Park. Narrow sites may have limited side access, so we look at garage, under-house, and other practical installation options where a side wall isn't available.

Afternoon shading can also matter. West-facing rear yards on the escarpment can lose direct afternoon sun earlier than homes on the coastal flats, which may affect how much solar generation is available and therefore how the system should be sized.

Coastal homes from Stanwell Park to Kiama need consideration around exposure to salt air. We assess where equipment can be positioned and how it can be appropriately protected for the site.

Battery Installation Standards

Solar battery installations in Wollongong and Illawarra must meet applicable electrical and safety requirements, including AS/NZS 5139. The standard covers battery positioning, clearances, and protection from potential hazards, which is why the proposed location needs to be assessed before installation.

For the full requirements, see our NSW installation page.

Possible Limitations

Apartments and most strata properties generally can't take a home battery because of shared electrical infrastructure, common areas and battery positioning requirements.

Steep, narrow or restricted-access properties aren't automatically ruled out, but nothing gets promised until the site has been assessed.

We'll tell you what's realistic for your home before you commit to anything.

  • Safety

Our batteries use LiFePO4 chemistry with integrated fire suppression, installed to AS/NZS 5139 by every crew, every time.

  • Proven track record

VoltX Energy has been recognised as a top 5 battery installer by SunWiz and sits behind thousands of Australian home installs, which is a big part of why we're regarded as a trusted solar battery installer in Wollongong and Illawarra.

  • End-to-end solar service

We handle the whole thing from an NSW base, so after-sales support is a local phone call, not a call centre overseas.

What Our Customers Say

Stellar Workmanship and Professional Installation

“VoltX Energy's customer service and workmanship has been stellar. They are also very competitive. The technical team is well-versed in all aspects of battery and electrical technology. I had my 48kW system installed within 4 days of paying my nominal deposit. The installation team were very professional and collaborative. They did a super neat job taking the cabling through our double brick walls and through the roof cavity to the meter box. They installed the additional circuit breaker at the main power board and connected everything up very professionally. They cleaned up after the work and left the place tidy.”

Ram, NSW

Huge Difference in Our Monthly Electricity Bill

“Our electricity bills, even with solar and a small battery, were still $400-$600 per month, so we got a VoltX Energy system installed. From receiving the quote to installation was about a week! We realized our usage was so high we struggled to charge the battery, but they set it up so we could get a feed-in from the grid at off-peak. Changed providers and now our bill is around $170 per month! It definitely has made a huge difference. Everyone we have dealt with has been amazing.”

Clay Potts, NSW

Professional Setup Built for Smart Off-Peak Charging

“I got the VoltX Energy battery system installed at our semi. The installation team were very quick and efficient and installed the system exactly where I wanted it with minimal disruption. There were no hidden extra costs. The system works perfectly with no problems. Once setup, it’s easy to see consumption from the batteries. If the batteries need a grid top-up, you can set the recharge time to when the rates are the lowest cost for you, taking full advantage of off-peak pricing.”
