" I would say put VoltX Energy batteries. Their service is quite good. They're quality batteries. They do what they say they're going to do. Overall, I had a very good experience, and I'd recommend them to other people.

CASE STUDY

Six people, one battery, and a grid he barely touches

How Strahan put his existing 6.5 kW solar to work in Raymond Terrace and took a $300 monthly bill down to about $22.

Problem to Solve

Strahan lives in Raymond Terrace, New South Wales, with six people in his household. He had installed a 6.5 kW solar system about three years earlier, but the bills kept rising despite generating roughly twice the power the household consumed. He was selling a portion back to the grid but receiving very little for it. When his energy retailer announced a rate increase in July, his monthly bill was approaching $300. That was the moment Strahan decided to add batteries.

His goal was straightforward: use the power his solar was already generating, store it for night-time use, and get off the grid as much as possible. He also wanted enough capacity to handle overcast days without relying on grid top-ups.

The Installation

Kerri and her husband looked at other companies before deciding. The moment that made up their mind came during a football game, when they spotted VoltX Energy on the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles jerseys. Her husband said on the spot: we're going with them. They followed up on that instinct and were not disappointed.

Strahan had to leave for work during the installation but returned to find everything completed to a standard he was very happy with. He described Sam as friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to deal with, and the finished installation was neat and tidy.

Why VoltX Energy

Another provider had already approached Strahan with a 5-kW inverter and 20 kWh battery setup. He turned it down, not purely on price, but because the system did not suit his needs. He wanted a 10-kW inverter to handle the air conditioning load and more battery capacity than the recommended minimum to give the household a comfortable buffer on cloudy days.

After researching online, he decided on VoltX Energy. He noted that battery technology across providers is broadly similar these days, and that VoltX Energy's pricing, product sizing, and straightforward process gave him the confidence to proceed.

Energy Independence

Strahan has had no blackouts or interruptions since installation. He described having uninterrupted power supply throughout.

The one area where he exercises some restraint is air conditioning and heating at night. Running the heater draws noticeably on the battery, which is why he chose the 10-kW inverter and sized up from the recommended 20 kWh to 25 kWh. He still uses all other appliances, including the dishwasher, dryer, and washing machine, at any time of day, though he prefers to run them during daylight when solar is available.

The Results

The reduction in Strahan's electricity bills has been significant. His monthly bill, which had been approaching $300, came in at a credit on one bill and approximately $22 on the most recent one. He also switched energy retailers after the rate increase, which contributed to the savings alongside the battery.

Strahan described himself as basically self-sufficient now, estimating he relies on the grid about 1% of the time. On a typical sunny day, the batteries are fully charged by around 11 am or midday, and by the following morning the battery level sits at 40 to 50%. Since installation, the battery has dropped to the 10% threshold only twice.

The App

Strahan checks the app regularly, daily at first and now once or twice a week. He monitors battery voltage, overnight consumption, and charge levels. He noted a minor connectivity issue where the app requires a manual scan to reconnect, which he flagged as a small technicality he planned to sort out. Overall, he described the app as user-friendly and said it gives him everything he needs to monitor the system.
