Michael · Wagga Wagga, NSW
Battery capacity, with backup power and upgraded inverter
Grid electricity consumption on first two bills post-installation
Projected reduction in grid consumption on full sunny-weather performance
Access fee only, compared to up to $250 per month in winter previously
Halved the grid, in the worst weather of the year
How Michael cut grid consumption by half through a cloudy Wagga Wagga winter, with retirement and rising prices on his mind.
Problem to Solve
Michael lives in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, with his family. As he approaches retirement, the rising cost of electricity has become an increasing concern. With income set to decrease, he was thinking carefully about how to reduce fixed household costs and protect himself from ongoing price increases.
Michael already had a 5-kW solar array but hadn't added a battery yet. When a VoltX Energy advertisement appeared in his social media feed, he looked into it. The pricing initially seemed too good to be true, but straightforward background research confirmed it was a legitimate company. From there, the decision came together quickly.
The Installation
The VoltX Energy team handled the entire process, from first inquiry to installation, entirely by email. The original installation date was rained out and rescheduled a couple of weeks later. The installer kept Michael informed throughout the entire process. On the day, the installer arrived around midday, completed the job that afternoon, and was conscious of keeping the cabling neat and the finished result looking good on the wall. Michael described him as a really nice guy, easy to talk to and genuinely invested in doing a tidy job.
Why VoltX Energy
After comparing other providers on price, system size, and overall value, VoltX Energy stood out for Michael. He was also drawn to the company's community presence and environmental commitments, which he described as important to him alongside the purely financial considerations.
He found the engagement with the team straightforward and efficient from the very first email. He had expected some pressure or complexity but instead found the process to be simple and smooth throughout.
Day-to-Day Change
Before the battery, Michael timed high-energy appliances such as the dishwasher, clothes dryer, and washing machine to run during off-peak hours to reduce costs. At times, that meant staying up late to wait for the off-peak window to open.
With the battery in place, those appliances can run at any time of day without concern. Michael described it as living without thinking about it so much.
The App
Michael uses the VoltX Energy app regularly and said the recent update introduced a visual system layout and a more detailed daily performance graph showing sunshine, battery charge, and grid interaction all in one view. He noted that the app lets users hide technical data that clutters the display, making it as simple or as detailed as they want.
The System
| BATTERY | VoltX Energy 50 kWh |
| INVERTER | 10 kW single phase |
| SUPPLIER | VoltX Energy |
| LOCATION | Wagga Wagga, NSW |
| INSTALL DATE | Last week of April 2026 |
The Results
Michael's first two electricity bills after installation showed grid consumption down by 50%. He noted that this occurred during a period of unusually poor weather, with heavy cloud cover throughout May and June. This means the battery reached 100% off solar on only two days in the first seven to eight weeks.
On sunny days when the system performed at capacity, Michael described the feeling clearly: the battery fully charged, solar covering the house, nothing coming from the grid. At that point, the only ongoing cost was the access fee of about $50 per month, compared with winter electricity bills that previously reached around $250 per month.
With better weather, Michael expects grid consumption to fall by as much as 95 to 100%.
