Michael Caton has been a familiar face on Australian screens since 1969 — from Darryl Kerrigan in The Castle to Ted Taylor in Packed to the Rafters. He's an inductee of the Australian Film Walk of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Association of Cinema Operators Australia in 2014.

His connection to energy goes back further than acting — before his screen career, Michael worked in pumping and irrigation and sold windmills, where his interest in energy first began. Steve Menzies is the most prolific try-scoring forward in rugby league history and the fifth-highesttry-scorer in Australian first grade. Atwo-time premiership winner with Manly-Warringah in 1996 and 2004, Steve was inducted into the NRL Hall of Fame in 2018.

Since 2014, Steve has continued his connection with the game through Fox Sports and The Matty Johns Show. Away from rugby league, he's worked in mortgages and asset finance, giving him a practical understanding of the financial decisions Australian households make. We sat both of them down and asked the same things all of us ask. One had
a battery already. One was still waiting on his. Here's what they said.

What got you interested in home batteries in the first place?

Michael

"I wasn't always an actor. Before that I was in pumping and irrigation, and I used to sell windmills. I love the idea of storing the day for you — so when solar panels came along, I jumped right in. Home batteries seemed like an even better idea, because when the sun goes down you've still got your power."

Steve

"Not much, to be honest — that's what I knew going in. I'd heard of solar panels, put solar panels on, it's good for your electricity bill. But batteries? Hardly anything at all. Then you learn what they can do, and you think, well, it's a no-brainer."

Are rising electricity prices changing how Australians think about power?

Michael

"It's just the way prices are rising. We've had one of the biggest uptakes of solar panels in the world — and now, if you add batteries to that, it really makes sense. Then you look at your bill."

Steve

"A hundred per cent. When something's normal, you don't question it. When there's a better option, you go — hang on, what? Rising prices are the awareness. Then you get the knowledge. Then you get the change."

Are there misconceptions about home batteries?

Michael

"I'm sure there are, because there's always someone who wants to make it complicated. If you get the wrong information from people, well, there you go. Some people say they don't like stuff on the roof, or that ugly thing over there — I think that's a load of rubbish, really. I'm looking forward to the time when solar panels and batteries are just part of the design."

Where does battery technology fit into the future of Australian homes?

Michael

"I think it will be absolutely essential. At some stage, every new house will be designed with batteries in mind. And I really feel for people living in apartments — something needs to be worked out for them too, so that if they want to, they can."

Steve

"Once people have the knowledge, I think it'll be part of all of them going forward. I can't see a reason why anyone wouldn't do this. Eventually it'll be part of all new homes built."

Where does battery technology fit into the future of Australian homes?

Michael

"I've got to get back into harness — walking, and the gym about twice a week. And the walks on the beach — definitely."
